This post is part of the sequel about design classics. After Emilie bought a set of Danish wooden fauteuils, she changed the woollen fabric in off white for a khaki coloured cotton canvas. The upholstery has been done by an expert, whom advised her to renew the pillow filling. Although this renewal was a little financial setback, Emilie decided to renovate these Danish design classics thoroughly in order to enjoy them for the next 15 years. If she would not change the pillow filling, she would have to go back to the upholsterer within 2 years. The life cycle of the best quality in foam, applied for pillow filling, is 20 years tops. So our tip is to allocate a budget for professional upholstery when you have plans in buying a design classics. The total costs for 2x fauteuils were € 1200,00. This amount is equal for the price you’ll pay for a renovated set at any retro design store. We re command our upholsterer and if you would like to receive his address, send us an e-mail via our contact form.

This blog post and more to come will give a list of our addresses in affordable design classics. Hans J. Wegner, an awarded Danish designer, created simple but comfortable wooden chairs in the beginning of the last century. His designs are typical for their subtle wood finish. After some desk research we learned that his designs are still wanted and expensive. In order to find a bargain we ticked the name of the designer in the search box of the local Dutch e-bay, called marktplaats.nl and found these treasures. The seller bought this set of Danish fauteuils during his city trip in Berlin. The first owner was a Berlin Doctor, whose household was been sold at the local flee market, where the seller and his wife were looking for bargains. Back in Holland the fauteuils did not fit and were presented for sale. Our bargain: € 160,00 for a set of Danish classics.
Next post is about the upholstery of these fauteuils.
The Bouroullec brothers
May 26th, 2009

The brothers Bouroullec are very productive and busy. Last week in New York they have been rewarded for their ‘Vegetal Chair’ for Vitra with the ICFF award 2009 for the best outdoor furniture. Next to this chair they created a modular room dividing system for Kvadrat with the name “Clouds” . This caught our eye for the reason that the system, made out of fabric pieces, is a solution for livings with acoustic problems. “Clouds” is a modular system that can be attached to walls, suspended from ceilings and wrapped around doors. The shape of ‘Clouds’ depends upon its usage. We think this design is innovative and applicable for office spaces in old buildings. The application of Clouds will deduce reverberation and create intimacy.

Tips & Tricks for XL BBQ Party
May 18th, 2009

This blogpost will give an other insight of one of many results of our solutions in color | clutter | lay-out
Features:
A party at the deck of a summer house with a styling budget of less than € 100,00
Lay-out:
The view of this summer house is magnificent, it is situated parallel to the canal and opposite the quayside of the village. We placed the party tent along the deck and attached the tables to each other in order to create ‘an Italian family dinner’ atmosphere. If we could redo this styling we would create several islands of tables instead of one long table. A BBQ is a party where people are on the move and are in need of easy access to tables and chairs. With such an occasion a long table is fancy but not practical.
Color:
We asked the caterer for a simple white tent & chairs and we covered the table tops with white paper tablecloths. Our choice for white was to contrast the numerous colors that people perceive when they are entering the party deck with its beautiful scenery.
For a subtle touch tone we applied sets with turquoise and white sturdy candles, combined with a simple small green tumbler, filled with sage. For the flower arrangements, we harvested branches of blossoming elderberry and arranged them in old milk buckets.
Clutter:
We must confess that we did not check this.
PS for the decoration of the party tent and entrance we clustered different sized rice paper balls and let them fly in the wind.
Solutions for Amsterdam loft
May 17th, 2009

Features:
A two room apartment of 100m2 in a former warehouse from the seventeen century.
Lay-out:
The loft is a rental, therefore nothing could be changed, except for the location of the kitchen sink. We placed the sink in the centre of the loft, in order to divide the XL space in a living , a kitchen and a study.
Color:
The loft was delivered in milk white (RAL9010). We set the color palette by our choice for large oak floorboards in whitewash. This is the best match with the grayish green tone, in which the staircase of this old building has been painted. This tone in green is typical for old Amsterdam interiors and we used this Amsterdam green for the upholstery. The cotton velvet curtains the bedroom are in antique beige, suiting the brilliance of the nineteen century wardrobe and writing table. For the large windows in the living we’ve chosen white linen curtains and ditto colored shutters, in order to enhance the sun in this airy space. This in contrast with dark marine painted side tables, an enormous kaki colored dresser and a black shiny dishwasher.
Clutter:
Luckily this loft has been provided with a pantry. We filled this room with Ikea racks (OMAR) and white boxes and created an easy access for the ironing board, a stepladder and Thonet hat stand. This solution for clutter is simple, cheap and presentable to guests.
PS we also used the Ikea OMAR racks for book shelves!
Solutions for an Amsterdam apartment
May 16th, 2009

This blogpost will give an insight of one of many results of our solutions in color | clutter | lay-out.
To get an idea of this project we will start with the best features. Typical are the sliding doors with art deco glass decoration and a large bay window. The kitchen of the former 3 room apartment has been attached to a small room in order to create a kitchen with a dining area.
Lay-out:
The problem with this idea, was the existence of just one wall to apply a kitchen unit and no other space left for cabinets. The solution was to hang up long racks for pottery and pans and to purchase a round dining table instead of a rectangular one. The bedroom is small and rectangular. To get the best out of such a space is to place the bed parallel of its length. We end with the study; it’s open and visible for guests. We eliminated the entrance & cabinet doors in the living & study in order to create the impression of a larger apartment.
Color:
The colors in the kitchen are white, combined with a painted rear wall in indigo and china blue accessories. Beige curtains with striping in marine | white and white shutters provide an intimate atmosphere and dilute the cleanliness of the kitchen unit. The walls and accessories are white in order to give the bedroom a fresh identity. This is possible for the reason that this room is headed south-east. If the room was headed north, the white would be too cool.
Clutter: To avoid the possibility of clutter, we purchased white boxes to fill the cabinet in the study. For the sake of a neat impression, we exchanged the different colored | sized filing systems for just one.
Patricia Urquiola
May 12th, 2009

This Spanish Designer is a favorite of ours; she knows how to play with textures, forms and fabrics. A good example of her skills in the transformation of forms is Antibodi for Moroso. This label is a collection of chairs and chaises longues in different sets of colors. De silhouette is subtle and the fabric the result of a sort of origami. This season Moroso presented ‘Fergana’ during this year’s Salone di Mobile. The novelty about this new set of sofa’s is the application of embroidery with inspirations from the Middle East. When you have a practical look at chairs with origami and embroidered sofa’s, than this might not suit busy living. We like to show you this designs for the reason that we think that the work of Patricia have an influence upon industry of interior design. You can see her designs as a confirmation of the growing demand for the application of authentic crafts in interior design. We end this post with Flo, her design label for Driade. This tribal inspired collection of chairs and stools was presented in 2000. At that time is was quite unique to apply tribal crafts for a Italian design label like Driade. Now a day’s tribal is a buzz.

Tord Boontje for Moroso
May 8th, 2009

NY Times, style magazine, May 3rd, 2009
Tord Boontje is a Dutch designer with his studio in France. Probably you’ll recognize his hanging lamp “garland light” or his tableware called “tablestory”. We love his designs for its simplicity and the stories they tell. In French you could say his style is feerique. For Moroso, Tord created ’shadowy’: a simple chair in a super elegant form and a lovely African graphic design. This and many other African inspired design has been presented under Moroso’s label during this year’s Salone di Mobile in Milan.
