Amsterdam Modern in Mohawk General Store, LA
Amsterdam Modern is the result from the cooperation between man and wife. The man has a business in the import of vintage/classic cars and his wife is selling vintage furniture and lamps that she sources from The Netherlands. Together they’ve created an import platform that is generating cost reduction and efficiency. On the creative side Amsterdam Modern is growing, next to a large warehouse in Nuys, the couple recently opened a satellite warehouse in Phoenix and a shop in shop in the Mohawk General Store in LA. I’ve been visiting the online store of Amsterdam Modern and I’m impressed by its quality in Dutch design furniture. Especially the sourcing for Pastoe design adds value to this smart concept. Here a list of good stuff that are certainly worth considering to buy.

Maurizio & Kathleen Almanza, owners of Eccola Imports
From their house in Rome, Eccola owners Maurizio and Kathleen source their collectibles that they sell in their LA-showroom. A large size of their inventory is to find on their website eccolaimports.com and when you have a moment to browse through their furniture, lamps and decorative objects you will conclude that this couple has a nose for antiques and modern design. Their taste and style is so much appreciated in Hollywood that the producers from Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Ocean’s 11 hired their props in order to deliver authentic film sets. Hotel Condesa df

Rooftop Hotel Condesa df, Mexico City
Hotel Condesa DF is housed in a 1928 landmark building that has been named after its neighborhood. Condesa is a green district on the west side of Mexico City centre. An international design team was responsible for the renovation, decoration and visual communication of this part of this Mexican hospitality formula, called Grupo Habita. One member of the design team is India Mahdavi whose style I like. Together with the architects Xavier Sanchez and Waldo Higuerra, she managed to transform this former apartment building into a more than charming hotel with a bar, restaurant, club, rooftop terrace, rooms and suites.

- the Boundary, London
Fancy a London night in a hotel suite decorated with Mies van der Rohe furniture or inspired by the designs of Andre Putman? Have a look at the Boundary, one of Sir Terence Conran’s latest hospitality ventures. Just like his other developments in real estate, this hotel with a roof top restaurant, a bakery, a food store and many more is a testimonial of his strong belief in the alignment of architecture, design and food. This rewarded designer and founder of Habitat, created 12 spacious guest bedrooms each in a certain style. Have a look at the site and read his reviews on each room.

Thonet 209M

Thonet 209M
There is no secret about the fact that I’m a fan of Thonet. This nineteen century pioneer and innovator in prefab furniture assembled successful designs that are resulting in today’s extended collections in classics and latest productions. The Dutch agent of Thonet distributes a classic Thonet chair that is not known to the mass and beautiful in its line. It’s the 209. This chair is available in bentwood with an open back or with a backrest in wicker, molded plywood or covered with leather or fabric. My preference is the black version with an open back and a molded plywood backseat. The name of this version is 209M.

Front room of NYC Standard Hotel's Standard Grill
When browsing through the last Vogue Living July | August edition I learned that the front room of the New York Standard Hotel’s Standard Grill has been decorated with the Thonet 209M. If you take a careful look you will see that the ends of the chair legs have been dipped in white paint. This optical trick makes the chairs look like they are floating around the front room. If you have a rather small space to furnish with dark colored furniture, this tip is a good one to apply.
Wall sculpture
June 5th, 2010

From Vogue Living May June edition 2010
As a kid, brought up amidst English antiques, Sanderson & Laura Ashley flower prints and late nineteen century paintings, I did not understand the stuff that was hanging on the walls in other people’s homes. We are talking about the late seventies with bungalows, furnished conversation pits, lots of wood panels, orange earthenware and those funny sculptures on the bare brick walls. Since I’ve seen a steel wall decoration piece at Habitat’s, I’m beginning to like this kind of decoration. It’s very linear and its ads something light to your white plastered walls. The art Yabu & Pushelberg applied in their New York apartment is from another league. What you see in the visual above is a mobile sculpture by Knopp Ferro. The name of this delicate piece of art is ‘Linienschiff 18:35′. Have a look at the site of this German artist; there you can see another ‘Linienschiff’, this one from the 11:24

Model 45 by Finn Juhl
Yesterday I mentioned the name of Finn Juhl . This Danish designer from the forties was a pioneer in his field. His expertise in architecture, interior - and industrial design made him create furniture that completed a house. I do love his organic forms and the perfect completion of his woodwork designs. His chair with the name Model 1945 is my favorite and I ‘m still browsing for a copy and hoping that one day I’ll buy a Model 1945 from the first owner. You have to have dreams, don’t you?

Amore Mio chair by Jon Goulder
Last month I promised to get back to the May-June edition of Vogue Living. Today I would like to show you a few designs by Jon Boulder, whose latest collection is to be admired in the Vogue Living . This Australian designer | craftsman has been brought up amidst antiques and the impact of his family owned furniture factory. On his website he communicates that the decorum of the antiques inspired him to create ‘clean-lined design’. And this feature reminds me of the work by the Danish designer Finn Juhl. I think there is a similarity in their designs and that is their respect for nature and woodwork. This respect results in the perfect completion of their timber products and the creation of natural designs. The name of the chair is Amore Mio and is to combine with the ditto named coffee table.
