the Surf Lodge
July 26th, 2010

Jamie Mulholland is originally from a suburb nearby Cape Town and started his bartending career in St Martin 16 years ago. Since then the ‘Zuid-Afrikaner’ worked his guts out in order to become today’s successful entrepreneur in the hospitality business. His latest venture is Surf Lodge located on the east end of Long Island (only 125 miles from NYC!).

Through a small article in this month’s edition of the British Vogue I became aware of this elegant lodge that has been decorated with simple but characteristic items like the elephant stools, a few Eames chairs, the photo frames in black & white and the subtle color schemes with tones in egg yolk & ocean blue. All set against a background of white plastered walls, sun kissed timber jetty and rattan.

I know for sure that I will visit this laid back place with lots of Caribbean- | South-African- | Aussie beach vibes.
Spring | Summer 2010

In a blog post from last September 2009, I promised to come back for the new trends. In it I showed some designs from ‘Couturiers’ that might have influenced the interiors industry.
From the February edition of Vogue UK I have scanned an add from Burberry’s that is visualizing a couple of influences for the SS 2010 lines in furnishing, furniture and accessories. The designs of the Mac’s (trench coats), the military belt and the bag descend from some classics of the nineteen forties. But the use of an organic sort of adaptation like the folding of the skirt and top and the bamboo like structure in the leather of the bag result in a new look that is urban, chic and natural. The soft colouring in powdery and shiny tones in camels, grays, greens, skin and stones fortify this trend that is suitable for interiors.
Black and egg yolk

Sean Scherer’s applied colour palette of black & egg reminded me of a Boston café I photographed back in 1996. As a trespasser of this café I was drawn to the yellow interiors and the black painted café façade. The paradox of the expression of the yellow painted inner wall and the restrained impression of the exteriors resulted in my curiosity and my effort to take the shot.

For the latest edition of the British Vogue the house of Jo Kornstein has been photographed. She is a Set Designer and co-owner of Howie & Belle, a vintage shop in the north west of London. In her bedroom Kornstein applied the same (attract & repel) tricks. Have a close look at the photo with the black painted rear wall and the yellow accessories. The latter ones I retrieved at her shop in antiques and curiosities. When I browsed through her website I found some lovely stuff. Do see the last one with the glass case stuffed with lampshades.
